The Boy Who Drew Cats

Yume Gallery

The Illustrations of Manabu Saito

TBG is delighted to celebrate the opening of Yume Japanese Gardens with a special exhibition of illustrations by Manabu Saito. Selected from the Gardens’ private collection of Saito’s work, the show spotlights 14 original publisher proofs he created for the children’s book, “The Boy Who Drew Cats, and Other Tales of Lafcadio Hearn.”

While best known for his richly detailed botanical watercolors, Saito’s charming illustrations in this exhibition burst off the page in saturated color and demonstrate the range of his artistic style and skill. The illustrations depict scenes from three of the book’s six Japanese folktales, and feature a homesick sea dragon, a kind-hearted priest transformed into a fish and, of course, a boy who drew some very special cats.
