Sound, Silence, and Time: A Glimpse into Hōgaku

Yume Museum

When approaching Japanese traditional music— hōgaku —we discover that it is not simply about hearing what is unfamiliar, but rather entering a space where sound, silence, and time coexist in delicate balance.

This musical encounter reaches beyond melody to the character of sound itself: the breath of the performer, the vibration of a string, the resonance of wood. Even what might elsewhere be dismissed as “noise”— such as the strike of a plectrum against the instrument — is embraced here as part of its unique voice.

The exhibition will offer a glimpse into the vast and multilayered world of hōgaku. Yume’s two pocket galleries will showcase a selection of traditional Japanese instruments from Yume’s historic and new collections, complemented by generous loans from individual artists and the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM).
