Botanical Art in Watercolor: Prickly Pear Florilegium Sketchbooks

This class is a great introduction to watercolor techniques for botanical art. We will explore Prickly Pear through a unique medium that has been used by artists and illustrators throughout the years. These plants are native to the southwest and a wonderful bright delight when they bloom!
Class Capacity is 15 – Register Early!

- Basics in watercolor color application & techniques
- Discover organic shapes and line contour
Art materials are not included, please provide your own.
Recommended Art materials (Substitute as needed):
- 2H, 4H, or Color pencil w/ eraser,
- Eraser (Streader), & kneaded eraser
- Sketchbook. Any size but 5”x7,” or 8” x 10” work great. Stillman & Birn Zeta Series Mixed Media, Crescent Rendr, or Moleskin Watercolor sketchbooks are great for this project – extra heavy weight, 270gsm, or over 140lb
- Watercolor – Winsor & Newton Assorted Colors 6-12pk (Any variety of watercolor brand and colors are okay)
- Mixing Palette
Main ones used in this class: Lemon Yellow, Cad Pale Yellow, Sap Green, Hooker Green Light, Ultramarine, Colbot Blue, Cad Red Hue, Perm. Rose, Mauve.
- Paint Brushes: #4 Long Round, #6 Long Round, & Synthetic inexpensive brush for mixing. Travel brush that comes with travel kit can do as well!
- Optional – Small spray bottle or eye dropper

2 water cups, paper towels & Photos of Prickly Pears (A few photos will be sent before class if you’d like to print them out and bring them with)
Instructor
Adela Antoinette
Adela Antoinette (She/Her) is a published illustrator, designer and makeup artist. As a southwest born desert dweller, Antoinette’s work primarily centers on Sonoran Desert flora but fluctuates within botany through visiting different regions across the states. She specializes in various traditional mediums including her favorite, watercolor in which she has taught in workshops and classes at the Denali Education Center and The Drawing Studio. Her work has been displayed in various galleries in Arizona, Alaska, and California. Antoinette studied illustration and design at the University of Arizona, receiving her degree in Visual Communication. She is a Tucson, Arizona artist currently living in New York City.
Refund & Cancellation Policy
No refund will be issued less than 15 days prior to any Community Class. A $10 cancellation fee will be applied to all refunds. No refunds will be issued for special events. We reserve the right to cancel Community Classes due to insufficient registration, garden closure, or inclement weather, in which case, participants will receive a full refund. People with disabilities should make requests for accommodation as early as possible to allow time to make appropriate arrangements.
