In over a century of filmmaking, Mexico has a rich history of cinema that has created iconic images that have reinforced gender roles in this society. Women have also contributed to filmmaking and have presented a different view from mainstream cinematic productions that challenges the societal expectations of Mexican women. This presentation will give an overview of the work of female directors to demonstrate how they defy traditional constructions of Mexican women.  Liz Rangel Arriola completed her Ph.D. at the University of Arizona in XX Century Latin American Literature with an emphasis on Women’s Cinema. She teaches Spanish Language at Pima Community College’s West Campus.
