About the Artist

Agustin Cruz Prudencio is an active participant in the thriving woodcarving tradition in Oaxaca. He resides in the village of San Agustin de la Juntas outside the capital city of Oaxaca where he works with his father Agustin Cruz Tinoco and brother, Manuel Cruz Prudencio, in the family studio. Until recent years the art of woodcarving has been confined to 3 villages in the Oaxaca Valley. It is unusual to find a woodcarving family working outside of those villages. The Cruz Prudencio family has distinguished itself a an award- winning family studio working outside the confines of the three traditional villages. Agustin and his family participate in the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico and visit Tucson, AZ during the year for exhibitions in a variety of venues. They are also featured in several prominent Mexican Folk Art books.
