SUMMARY:Fall Haiku Walk: Autumn Light at Yume
DESCRIPTION:Garden Story Time: The Seed and the Giant Saguaro\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n$30 Non-Member / $24 Member \n\n\n\n\nCapacity 15 \n\n\n\n\n\nAs autumn settles gently over Yume Japanese Gardens\, each path\, stone\, and tree offer an invitation to pause and notice. During this guided Haiku Walk\, participants will explore the gardens and quiet beauty of the season through mindful observation and the timeless practice of haiku. Together\, we will discover how light\, color\, water\, and silence reveal the subtle changes that make autumn one of the garden’s most reflective seasons and how a single moment in nature can become a poem.   \n\n\n\nNo previous writing experience is needed. This experience is open to anyone with a sense of curiosity and a willingness to notice the beauty of the present. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by \n\n\n\nKenneth Pearson\n\n\n\n\n\nKenneth Pearson is the Founder of Live a Haiku Life\, a speaker\, author\, and facilitator at Yume Japanese Gardens of Tucson. Through workshops\, guided Haiku Walks\, and reflective experiences\, he helps people rediscover the extraordinary within ordinary moments. His work is rooted in the belief that haiku is more than poetry. It is a way of seeing that awakens presence\, deepens awareness\, and inspires a more intentional way of living through what he calls The Presence Practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRefund & Cancellation Policy\n\n\n\nNo refund will be issued less than 15 days prior to any Community Class. A $10 cancellation fee will be applied to all refunds. No refunds will be issued for special events. For our opening concert\, please join us in the gardens for an evening of Traditional Japanese Music featuring distinguished koto artist Shirley Kazuyo Muramoto and local shakuhachi player Paul Amiel\, performing classical repertoire in an intimate program of sound and stillness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nperformer \n\n\n\nPaul Amiel\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Amiel is involved in a variety of world music\, playing gothic harp\, Chinese guqin\, Turkish ney\, Ancient Greek Lyre\, among others\, and regularly performs with his Balkan duo Kyklo. He studied Kinko Ryu shakuhachi with Iida Katsutoshi in Nagoya\, Japan\, and founded the Empty Bamboo Shakuhachi Circle in Tucson in 2014. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nperformer \n\n\n\nShirley Kazuyo\n\n\n\n\n\nShirley Kazuyo Muramoto\, is a teacher and performer on the Japanese koto. Shirley received her Shihan with honors and DaiShihan master koto credentials from the Chikushi Kai in Fukuoka\, Japan. Since the documentary came out Shirley continues to research and educate others in public schools\, universities and community groups about this important and neglected history. \n\n\n\n\n*No refunds will be issued for special events \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming Classes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Family \n Garden Story Time: The Crow and the Pitcher \n October 21 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Family \n Garden Story Time: Frida Kahlo and her Animalitos \n October 28 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Special\, Family \n Día de los Muertos Celebración en Nuestro Jardín \n November 1 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

For our opening concert\, please join us in the gardens for an evening of Traditional Japanese Music featuring distinguished koto artist Shirley Kazuyo Muramoto and local shakuhachi player Paul Amiel\, performing classical repertoire in an intimate program of sound and stillness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nperformer \n\n\n\nPaul Amiel \n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Amiel is involved in a variety of world music\, playing gothic harp\, Chinese guqin\, Turkish ney\, Ancient Greek Lyre\, among others\, and regularly performs with his Balkan duo Kyklo. She has expanded the repertoire of traditional koto music through her jazz fusion group\, the Murasaki Ensemble\, and in collaborations\, arranging and composing music for the koto in various styles and genres. Shirley has performed across the U.S.\, Canada and Japan\, collaborated with many artists and performed with amazing musicians\, as well as performed for celebrity notables for over 60 years.  For many decades Shirley researched Japanese traditional performance arts in the World War II concentration camps. SUMMARY:Roots Unearthed: How Ancient Roman Botany Shaped the Plant Sciences
DESCRIPTION:Garden Story Time: The Seed and the Giant Saguaro\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nFree with Gardens Admission-Registration Required \n\n\n\n\nCapacity 60 \n\n\n\n\n\nThe expansion of the ancient Roman world yielded an abundance of knowledge about the variety of botanical life within and beyond its borders. A burgeoning awareness of different species engendered innovative literary and scientific treatments of plants and their attributes\, from idealized poetic depictions of nature to rigorous scientific studies. By tracing the origins of the plant sciences from Linnaeus back to the Romans\, I will explore the lasting impact of ancient botany and the enduring symbiosis between humanistic and scientific endeavors. Topics to be discussed include ancient botanical classification and description\, the history of Latin as a scientific language\, and the development of botanical nomenclature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSarah McCallum\n\n\n\n\n\nSarah McCallum is an Associate Professor of Classics in the Department of Religious Studies and Classics at the University of Arizona. In her teaching and research\, she focuses on Greek and Roman language and literature\, particularly epic\, elegiac\, and pastoral poetry. Her recent and ongoing projects examine the complex negotiation between tradition and innovation that shapes the development of Roman poetry in the first century BCE. Throughout her life she has fostered a deep appreciation for and fascination with the natural world\, and in her future endeavors she aims to delve deeper into ancient depictions of the natural world and its plant and animal inhabitants. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming Classes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Family \n Garden Story Time: The Crow and the Pitcher \n October 21 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Family \n Garden Story Time: Frida Kahlo and her Animalitos \n October 28 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Special\, Family \n Día de los Muertos Celebración en Nuestro Jardín \n November 1 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

SUMMARY:Pre-contact Agaves in the Southwestern United States: Rediscovering Lost Crops among the Hohokam and other Arizona Cultures
DESCRIPTION:Garden Story Time: The Seed and the Giant Saguaro\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nFree with Gardens Admission-Registration Required \n\n\n\n\nCapacity is 60 \n\n\n\n\n\nAgaves have long been recognized for their importance in Mesoamerica\, but their significance to Indigenous peoples north of the U.S.–Mexico border has only recently gained broader attention. Research shows that pre-Columbian farmers cultivated multiple domesticated agave varieties in Arizona as early as A.D. 600\, with many surviving today as living remnants of ancient agricultural systems. These plants provide valuable insights into prehistoric farming\, trade\, and migration\, while DNA and morphological studies suggest Arizona may have been a secondary center of agave domestication. Learn how this work highlights the importance of integrating botany\, archaeology\, and Indigenous knowledge to better understand the cultural and ecological history of these remarkable plants. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ninstructor \n\n\n\nWendy C. Hodgson\n\n\n\n\n\nI have lived in and loved the Sonoran Desert for more than 40 years. My areas of interest include Southwest U.S. and northern Mexico floristics\, rare and endemic plants and taxonomy and systematics of Agave and Yucca\, including the study of pre-Columbian agave cultivars. Other current projects include the study and documentation of the flora of the Grand Canyon region\, including the evolution and distribution of certain plant groups as affected by the unique factors characteristic of this area. I am also studying and documenting Southwest US cacti\, coordinator for the Cactus family treatment for Intermountain Flora and co-coordinator for the Cactus Family of Arizona project by Garden research staff and research associates. I am an avid plant collector who strives towards making high-quality specimens in difficult groups like Agavaceae and Cactaceae. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming Classes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Family \n Garden Story Time: The Crow and the Pitcher \n October 21 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Family \n Garden Story Time: Frida Kahlo and her Animalitos \n October 28 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Special\, Family \n Día de los Muertos Celebración en Nuestro Jardín \n November 1 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Before launching their lanterns\, participants may write personal messages\, wishes\, or prayers upon them. \n\n\n\nAs the lanterns drift slowly across the water\, their gentle procession creates a serene and contemplative sight—an evening of reflection\, remembrance\, and peace. \n\n\n\n*No refunds will be issued for special events \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming Classes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Family \n Garden Story Time: The Crow and the Pitcher \n October 21 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Family \n Garden Story Time: Frida Kahlo and her Animalitos \n October 28 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Special\, Family \n Día de los Muertos Celebración en Nuestro Jardín \n November 1 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
