  • Karl Blossfeldt Photography Exhibit

Phacelia congesta, Plate 41 from Wundergarten der Natur (1932)

Phacelia congesta, Plate 41 from Wundergarten der Natur (1932)

Opening Reception on December 7, 11am -1pm in the Gallery at the Gardens.

Photographer, sculptor, teacher and artist, Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932), is best known for his detailed photogravures of optically magnified plants and flowers published in two famous texts, Urformen der Kunst (Forms in Art) (1928) and Wundergarten der Natur (Magic Garden of Nature) (1932). A man engaged in the great artistic debates of his day, Blossfeldt passionately believed that the pure, organic forms found in nature could be the source for a new modern art. He devoted his career to making photographic enlargements of simple details in order to reveal the fundamental structures of the plant world, creating deceptively simple images that bridged the realms of aesthetics and science. In works such as Campanula medium, Plate 82 from Wundergarten der Natur (1932), Blossfeldt methodically removed the bell-shaped flower from its natural habitat, flattened it, gently teased it open and then photographed the Campanula against a neutral background. In distilling his subject to its essence, Blossfeldt produced images that still help to define the wonder and complex beauty of the natural world.
